The number of victims of an explosion at a fuel depot near the Stepanakert-Askeran highway in Nagorno-Karabakh has reached 68 people. This was reported by the office of the ombudsman of the unrecognized republic. The identities of 21 victims have been established. Earlier, the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh also reported that 290 people were injured as a result of the explosion, 168 of them have already been taken to medical institutions Armenia. In addition, the release of the ombudsman of the unrecognized republic states that at least 105 people who, presumably, could have been near the gas storage facility at the time of the explosion, are listed as missing. Earlier, Armenian Health Minister Anahit Avanesyan said at a press conference that the remains of 125 victims in Nagorno-Karabakh were delivered to the republic. Later, the department clarified that among them were the remains of not only those who died near the Stepanakert-Askeran highway. The explosion occurred on the evening of September 25 at a warehouse where gasoline was distributed to those leaving for Armenia. Its cause is still unknown. The Commissioner for Human Rights in Nagorno-Karabakh, Gegham Stepanyan, said that there are not enough places in the medical institutions of the unrecognized republic to provide assistance to everyone: “The air ambulance must arrive urgently to save lives.” A week ago, on September 19, the Azerbaijani army began shelling Nagorno-Karabakh, calling it “anti-terrorist measures of a local nature.” The shelling stopped on September 20, when the Nagorno-Karabakh army agreed to lay down its arms.
