In 2009, Mezhprombank, owned by Pugachev, was in a pre-bankrupt state. Then, the TFR suggests, the head of the credit institution instructed the chairman of the executive directorate Alexandru Didenkoand then to Alexei Zlobin, who replaced him, to conclude 226 loan agreements with 114 “technical” borrowers – companies controlled by Pugachev in the amount of 125 billion rubles.
However, in 2010, the head of the bank decided to terminate the pledge agreements, entrusting this procedure at that time to the chairman of the executive directorate of Mezhprombank, Marina Illarionova. The accused complied with the instructions, as a result of which the bank was damaged by 64 billion rubles. This was one of the main reasons for the bankruptcy of a credit institution.

During the investigation and in court, Marina Illarionova claimed that she acted on the direct instructions of the owner of the bank, whose orders she was obliged to fulfill. In this regard, in the debate, she asked the court to show leniency. Her lawyers insisted on the same, arguing that if their client had not followed the order of the owner of the MPB, she would have simply been fired. At the same time, the lawyers pointed out that the statute of limitations, which is ten years, had already expired under the imputed article under their protection. After the revocation of the license from the MPB, a criminal case was initiated on the fact of embezzlement. Illarionova and her predecessors in office passed through it at first as witnesses, but it soon became clear that they would be transferred to the category of suspects. Then the accused in 2016 fled from the investigation and was put on the wanted list. She was detained only in September 2020. Since then, she has been in custody.
Illarionova did not admit her guilt in the case of embezzlement. According to the lawyers, their client simply fulfilled the requirements of the head of the bank, but the court ignored these arguments. As a result, the former top manager of the MPB was sentenced to four years in a penal colony with a ban on holding administrative positions for three years after her release.
